We all have certain moments in life when our perspective about something completely changes. Such experiences are so impactful that you are bound to reconstruct some major pillars of your life. Something similar occurred on 31st of November, 2015 at one of the biggest and greatest blogger meets – #BNLF held by Indiblogger at The Lalit, Mumbai, India.
Blog Now and Live Forever, this statement itself set the stature very high for Indiblogger Community. We were given unique codes which were scanned at the entrance before we were handed our personalized gate passes for the event. The theme of the event was set in an aircraft atmosphere, the IndiCrew was on toes for any assistant needed and the journey began with a bang by the IndiBand! Usually when the start is so good you tend to believe it might fizz out by the end…but don’t underestimate the awesomeness of Indiblogger just yet!
I had read the Agenda and was keen to learn what every speaker had to offer. The speakers consisted of some very talented personalities in the blogging, vlogging, writing & content marketing field. Purbha Ray, Arnab Roy, Anshul Tiwari, Christoph Trappe, Kanan Gill, Preeti Shenoy & Jeff Bullas were listed as the speakers for the day and each note from them was a keynote indeed. The #BNLF stage was elevated to another level by these amazing personalities. I was highly motivated after each session and I gained a lot of knowledge in just a day about struggles, achievements and techniques behind blogging & writing.
Among all these names BRUCE DICKINSON was a speaker everyone was way too eager to encounter. I had no idea who he was until a blogger buddy Mayuri, pointed out that he is the lead singer & frontman of the world’s most popular heavy metal band – Iron Maiden. I had heard of Iron Maiden and knew the genre of music it belonged to, one which I’d never ever willingly listen to even in my wildest dreams. So here I was a non-maiden fan, an anti heavy metal music human, unaware of a man who’d imprint my mind and my soul forever.
I was kind of excited when he was about to come on board and glorify the stage as I would get to gloat about it to my metal head friends and that’s about it. I don’t expect all musicians and artists to be smart in business but here he was talking about his secret formula of 0+0=1 and further proved this theory by explaining to us his authentic business accomplishments.
I was so amazed that a person whom I would otherwise shut my ears at for creating noise pollution is actually talking so much sense that I can’t help but listen attentively. He has insanely successful businesses while being awfully busy with other responsibilities in his life. The best part about it all was that he wasn’t high on anything and he was bloody awesome!
He showed us a very old Nokia mobile phone which he uses despite of having tapes all around it and a dysfunctional power button. He actually “connects to people” by calling them up rather than sending of an email and waiting for their reply. His formula is simple, you pick up the phone and call the person and your work is done there and then.
I was very fascinated with his energy and enthusiasm on stage. He kept walking left to right, made eye contact with the audience and cutely scratched his head when he was about to pour out his freshly brewed thoughts. He didn’t make us feel like we were nothing compared to him. We were his students and he was the teacher and he answered everyone’s questions very patiently. When asked by a blogger how much he would rate his life out of 10, his answer after a lot of ‘umms’ and ‘aaahs’ was 9/10 which I think should have been a digit higher.
Bruce recounted a memory of him being homeless sitting on a park bench and owning only a suitcase with few valuables and $10. At that time he never thought about being homeless, he in fact was happy about experiencing this phenomenon and was thinking of investing the $10 dollars he had but then decided to follow his heart on drinking some beer at a nearby pub. At the pub he met a musician friend whom he played with some years ago and asked him if he could provide his floor for one night to sleep, his friend agreed. If he had taken the other way around he’d be elsewhere but his heart led him on the right path.
Another question was on why he left Iron Maiden back in those days to which he answered that he felt that was the right thing to do although he had no clue what he wanted to do. He felt like he was on a dark path to nowhere but it lead him where he is now.
So basically he conveyed to us that in life there will be rough and unknown paths but you got to stay positive, follow your heart and move forward, one thing always leads to another. Life is an adventure and you got to explore by taking risks. He had motivated the crowd and it was evident. He completely made me love this smart & sincere side of him.

So that evening the “stereotype” about heavy metal musicians & super successful celebrities were shattered and I happily let it. He went through rutted roads which ended up being an essential part of his journey. I could connect to this at many levels. I was shaken a little as I actually liked him so much in just 2 hours of his talks. I think he is an amazing all rounder persona. He is driven with positivity, passion and purpose. I wanted to know more and more about his struggles and accomplishments. I wish I could get a picture with this man but I was very intimidated, I lurked around at the after party event but couldn’t sum up the courage to even speak. Actually I didn’t know what to say but I hope he comes across this someday and knows he plays a tiny role in boosting my dreams.
I learned so much more than what Bruce actually had to share. I have listed the main highlights that altered a lot of my thoughts.
- People have multiple personalities; don’t judge them based on one part of their personality. Knowing them as a whole is what will make you know for sure if you like or dislike that person.
- If you have a great business mind, only then take up entrepreneurship
- Pick up the phone and solve the issues rather than texting or waiting for emails. Connect with the people around you.
- Be silly and take risks, the outcome will be worth it
- Only Bruce Dickenson’s 0+0=1 formula will make you an extremely successful business person
- No matter how stupid it may seem that time…follow you heart
- There will always be light at the end of the tunnel, you got to keep going
- Be humble, caring & honest no matter how rich or famous you have become
- Never let go of your passions and keep learning always
- Metal heads know a lot more than just making noise. [This I know for sure as I have some multi-talented metal-head friends, one of whom is my best friend] #Respect
I know I am a complex personality myself. I have a job, a business and currently studying for my masters degree and I do a lot of other things including the obvious here. But I still have a lot more I want to learn and explore and I know I will do most of it before I die. I know it because I have faith in myself. People like Bruce strengthen my faith in following your passion & dreams. As an artist myself I can relate to being lost, going wrong but still never giving up. Every such person leaves an impact in my life and I know I yet have to meet many such persons who will make me see things in a better light. To conclude I’d say follow your dreams and believe in yourself.
